Relevant Experience
Developing a drawing application for an Android tablet
I was asked as part of a team to create a drawing application using the Java based IDE Processing. My responsibility was to program a portion of the application, which was later combined. The resulting application was a success in what we wanted to achieve and was completed within the allotted time. Within this project, I was able to experience what working on a fast paced developmental project was like, and I was able to learn ways in which to handle problems and resolve them under pressure. I gained an understanding of programming principles from functions to GUI developments, taking careful consideration into the Gestalt laws.
Designing a Way-Finding System for the University Building
This project was heavily focussed around the usability aspect of application development. The project looked in-depth at the process of prototype testing, and investigating the requirements of the user by using tools such as a PACT analysis. Implementing a project management methodology aided me in ensuring the schedule was kept to, that no areas in the task were missed, and the time frame predicted in the project burndown chart was accurate to real life. From this project I feel that I learned the importance of understanding and analysing the user’s needs in order to create a useful tool for them, as some requirements cannot be discovered without first consulting the user.
Creating a file-sharing web server in python, running on a Raspberry Pi
In pairs, I was tasked with creating a client in Python that would allow us to remotely access a Raspberry Pi and download a range of files from it. This task gave me insight into the range of libraries available for Python programming and the approaches behind file management. Also, as this was a short project, I learned how to manage my responsibilities correctly in order to complete a large workload within a limited time frame, and I was able to demonstrate that I was could work well under pressure.
Work experience
Coventry University Advocate Work
(Payed Employment, 2015-Present)
As an advocate, representing the University gives me a great sense of responsibility. My duties involve helping out at events, such as University Open days, setting up classrooms every morning before lessons, supporting and sharing knowledge with other students, among others. Also, on occasion I deal with confidential information, which demonstrates that I am able and trustworthy to deal with such material. From working as an advocate, I have gained valuable timekeeping skills, as the events ran by the university are always kept to a tight schedule, and also the ability to think on my feet, as my tasks for the day do often vary
Caludon Castle School, STEM Club assistant
(Unpaid work experience- 2012-2013)
During my work experience my roles included solving issues regarding equipment, assisting the pupils in their activities and answering any queries the pupils had, and encouraging participation in tasks. This experience really helped me grow my communication skills from interacting with the students on a one to one basis and explaining the tasks to them in ways that would aid their understanding better.
Awards
In my first year of university I received the Ada Lovelace Scholarship, which was aimed at female students in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). This scholarship was based on academic history, and a short essay written about how more females could be encouraged to the join the STEM sector.
Interests
Currently I am taking a Korean Language class, as I have been interested in Korean Culture for many years, and aspire to visit one day. I have also recently joined my university’s Jiu Jitsu club which is helping me to learn self-defence and discipline.
